Chapter One

"Love is measured not by how much by how much you say it. It's measured by how wrong you feel when you realize you didn't."

--

Ah, life. What a blessing it is. To wake up each morning, healthy and able. To take in fresh air and feel warm sunshine on your skin! To be greeted by friends and loved ones alike! To turn your eyes to the wide open blue sky and dream of your bright future!

Ah yes, life. What a blessing it is.

Or at least, what a blessing it would be if you weren't currently lost in a foreign, strange world with the one person that you despised more than anything else.

Needless to say, life for you couldn't be much worse.

But of course, life wasn't always out to get you. No, before all this, you had the perfect life. One that was humble, yet enchanting in its own way.

-- ~ --

Your name is (Name), a simple girl of (age) years. You were a charmer, (h/l) (h/c) hair, beautiful (e/c) orbs and a wonderful smile. You lived on the floating haven of Skyloft along with your older brother. And ever since the events that took place down on the surface world, you'd aspired to become a Knight at the Skyloft Academy.

So, you enrolled and within a few short months, you finally earned your Knightship. You were known around the island as "The Beam", for when you took to the sky on your (f/c) Loftwing, no one, not even the best knights could match you.

You'd become fair friends with the others in the Academy as well. Pipit was your healthy rival and always saw it fit to challenge you to races.

"You should always try to keep yourself and your Loftwing in tip top shape, (Name)." He'd say with a grin. The poor boy never won these races, but you both had too much fun to care.

His girlfriend, Karane, was your go-to gal. No matter what you were thinking, you could always count on Karane to lend an ear. You saw her as a sister, and you knew she felt the same.

You thought Fledge was a sweetheart. Always greeting you with a warm smile and a kind, "Hello, (Name). You look nice today."

You even got along with Groose and his gang. You found them all obnoxious and overbearing, but nonetheless, the boys certainly kept you entertained with their antics.

Zelda was a nice girl. Although the two of you never spoke more than was necessary, she always went out of her way to be kind and cheerful when you did.

Then...there was him. Link

There was just something about him. Something that just...irked you. Perhaps it was the way he walked? Maybe it was the fact that he refused to speak? Could it be the fact that each time you ran into him, he was with Zelda or doing something Zelda related or trying to get Zelda's attention or--...

You didn't like him. No, you didn't like him one bit.

Despite this, you had to admit, Link was every bit the Hero he was claimed to be. The way he selflessly risked his life to save Skyloft and the surface world was indeed very heroic. But even so, you just couldn't stand the boy.

So far, life was quite fine for you.

Then came the day it all started to spiral downward.

Headmaster Gaepora had called the Knights forward for an important meeting. Link, Pipit, Karane and for some strange reason Zelda were all present when you entered the Headmaster's chamber.

"Ah, it seems you are all present." The Headmaster spoke, his voice deep and full of authority. He cleared his throat. "As the Knights of Skyloft Academy, each and every one of you is expected to do your best to represent both our school and our home. I can proudly say that you all have lived up to this code outstandingly. And it is with this in mind that I present you with your newest assignments.

"As I am sure you all know, Link, our valiant Hero, has opened up the way from our haven in the sky to the world down below. And while we have all lived peacefully in Skyloft for many months since, it has come to my attention that the surface has many things to offer. My daughter Zelda has told me of many treasures upon the surface, and Link has in fact returned with many of these.

"And so, Knights of Skyloft, as you have most likely already guessed, your new assignment is to travel down to the surface world and not only find these treasures, but explore and expand your knowlage of this new world. While others may think this task dangerous, I have nothing but the utmost confidence in each of you. And with Link as our captain, I see no danger in sending you."

The Headmaster finished his speech and clasped his hands behind his back, casting a glance at each of the Knights. Pipit was the first to respond.

"Well, I'll certainly go!" He exclaimed, eyes alive with determination. "I'd be lying if I said I wasn't curious of what the surface world is like." Karane nodded her agreement.

"Headmaster, I'd be honoured!" She said, her confidence through the roof. She turned to you. "Right, (Name)?"

"Ah, yes!" You said, jumping slightly as you'd were suddenly regarded. "This'll be a great opportunity for us all to test ourselves." The Headmaster nodded firmly.

"Very good! Now, I would like to place you into groups. Seeing as Zelda and Link are the only ones who have been to the surface and back, I'll be setting them as your designated leaders."

You rolled your eyes.

'Oh.' You thought. So that's why she's here.'

"Pipit and Karane." The Headmaster continued. "I would like for you both to accompany Zelda. She will take the two of you to the surface first."

You watched as Pipit and Karane exchanged looks and and nodded their acceptance. Zelda had sent the two a smile. The blond girl said something, but you hadn't caught it.

For the only thing that made sense to you is that the Headmaster had just said:

"(Name), you will be going with Link."

And even that didn't make sense!

You jumped up out of your seat.

"A-ah, Headmaster--!" You began, your heart pounding insistantly within your chest. How dare he partner you with that...that...guy?! There was no way you'd go anywhere with him! Never! You'd sooner leap head first off of the island and plummet to your grave before you'd allow him to lead you! You were a top Knight after all!

But before you could even voice your complaints, Karane had grabbed your arm and sent you a glare, shaking her head in disapproval. Your shoulders dropped and you sighed in defeat.

"...yes, Headmaster..."

The man smiled.

"Very good. I am sure you will all do just fine. Now, Zelda, take Pipit and Karane to the bazaar. They will need help in preparation." He turned to face you.

"(Name), Link will help you with preparation as well. Go with him and allow him to assist you. When you are all finished, I would like you all to meet back here."

"Yes, Headmaster." Came the collective response.

"Good. Now, you are dismissed."

The Headmaster stepped back and everyone stood from their seats. Minus you, however. You remained seated, arms crossed over your chest, eyebrows creased in disapproval. Karane placed a hand on your shoulder.

"(Name), please. This is a once in a lifetime chance." She said, her voice firm but understanding. "You have to at least try to get along." You rolled your eyes, huffing in response. Karane sighed.

"I've got to go get prepared. You do the same." The girl gave your shoulder a reassuring squeeze and turned to leave. You said nothing, arms still crossed. Your (e/c) orbs remained locked on the floor.

That is, until a pair of boots stepped into your line of sight. You looked up slowly and focused a glare on the young man in front of you.

Yes. Your life was officially over.
